ALU
Defined as one of the most innovative companies in Africa by Fast company, African leadership University (ALU), entrusted Lakaz d’Art to work hand in hand with the design lab to conceptualize the overall look & feel of the company. Putting forward the Pan-african character of ALU, we didn’t hesitate to insert constant reminders of the continent into our design. Lakaz d’Art created three murals, a moonshot mural with Evan Soohun, a fictive african cityscape in black and white with Dreamdoodle, an abstract ALU timeline with Kimchi. To complement the whole design, we integrated an african pattern and fabric within all signage and seating area.
Tamarin Hotel
One of the most fun projects Lakaz d’Art worked on was creating murals for the hotel Tamarin (part of the Veranda group) around the central theme on beach, surfing, and the ocean. As part of the hotel renovation, Lakaz d’Art worked closely with the interior designers to create murals for more than a 100 bedrooms, one dining room and the garden are (incl. A mural of 4m high!). For all artwork, we used a concept called “Painting Jam”. We gather a group of artist around one wall. While the impromptu collective follows a few guidelines they really get to unleash their creativity on the blank wall creating a complex and soulful mural.

#2
Pairing up with La Isla Social Club, Lakaz d’Art designed a futuristic art installation for the annual music festival: La Isla 2068. This alternative festival trusted us to go completely crazy and create “The Black Box”. The concept was simple, build a 9 sqm black box that could accommodate people throughout the festival. Outside the box, three artists would create a futuristic mural with UV reactive paint. Inside the box, people could paint on the black fabric with UV reactive paint. At nightfall, the paint glittering under violet UV lights, The Black Box turned into a disco. First, kids rushed to paint all over the box. Then, adults became kids again and added their brush strokes to the mix. The Black Box, no-longer black, was now a colorful home.
TEDxPlainesWilhems
Pairing up with the organisation team of TEDx PlainesWilhems, Lakaz d’Art takes up the challenge of creating an ephemeral gallery for the event. This year’s theme is “Our World” and our team is determined to make an impact. A large amphitheatre with high ceiling and no wall space, we had to improvise. Sponsored by Gamma, Lakaz d’Art created a gallery with scaffoldings and hung 18 artworks from seven different artists. This makeshift circular gallery differentiated between two worlds: the world we measure (outer layer), the world we feel (inner layer).
The world we measure: Each scaffolding wrapped with black fabrics displayed different facts about the world. The world we feel: At the heart of the circle, all artworks displayed the soul of the world. It was a reminder that world data does not represent the way we are it is our feelings that do.
Nou Le Morne
In collaboration with the Nou Le Morne team, Lakaz d’Art worked on the creation of a temporary gallery in the woods of The Green Village à Cocteau Raffin for the Nou Le Morne Festival. The gallery felt like a stroll in a forest. A colourful walk that reminded us of our mixed cultural heritage. Throughout this gallery set in nature, the public discovered lamps made from recycled metal, stone sculptures, paintings, illustrations, photography, and collages. The gallery gave way to a magical journey between trees where the public experienced a real fusion between art and nature.
Hennessy Park Hotel
The Hennessy Park Hotel entrusted Lakaz d’Art with the mission of putting together one of their famous party at Backstage. According to the theme ”Monochrome”, we imagined an interactive and artistic setting for the night. The public was able to take pictures together with vintage televisions in the photo booth set up on an XXL 3D draughtboard. People were also able to express themselves around ”What do I want to do before I die? ”. Elsewhere the public was invited to discover some of the artists on our online platform through a monochrome gallery while the artist Nim Jundoosing delivered a striking live painting inviting us into her world.
JASON LILY
POEM FERTIL
This year, Lakaz d’Art had the pleasure of working with the Mauritian author Jason Lily, who has had a love for poetry since 2007.
On the 12th of August 2020, Jason launched his debut book ‘Poem Fertil’ at Lakaz d’Art. Poem Fertil is a poetry collection deeply inspired by nature, humanity, and his ancestral roots, written in Creole, French, and English offering a diverse and rich portrait of the Creole culture.
ALU Rwanda
For ALU Rwanda, we re-imagined the generic African narrative. Looking at Africa as a land of diversity and metissage, we fused traditions, patterns, and colors. We believe understanding and acknowledging the complexity of our continent is a first step for developing a Pan-African vision. We wish to preserve this diversity while putting forth the common “African pride” we all share. For this reason, we’ve chosen storytelling as a medium. Each artwork has the power to tell a new story with new archetypes and a new outlook on the current and future Africa. Every mural was designed to drape ALU’s campus with Pride, diversity, and togetherness.
This project embodies a perfect example of collaboration between two nations through art. Mauritian artists, Andy Leo and Shaun Beyond, designed two murals that were later executed by Rwandese, Mashakiro Bienvenue’s talented collective. An amazing creative symbiosis that delivered two striking and long-lasting murals on the African Leadership Campus in Rwanda.

#3
On the occasion of the third edition of the festival “La Isla 2068,” Lakaz d’Art, in collaboration with the Russian multimedia artist Vadim Kampel, transforms a noble tree of the Labourdonnais garden into a completely eccentric intergalactic universe. This collaborative creation, inspired by the famous “Rick & Morty” series, draws on fluorescent decors and interactive installations. Counterweight, pulleys and surprises, the children had no trouble entering this unique world and interacting with all its mechanisms. The magic tree has bewitched its audience.
